Welcome to Christow Community Shop!

On Tuesday 5th November 2024, after many hours of planning, dedication and hard work by an army of volunteers and local businesses alike, the new shop for the Teign Valley opened its doors to its first customers. Providing a social hub for the people of Christow and surrounding villages to meet, the not-for-profit community shop sells locally produced food and essential groceries and offers delicious hot beverages and snacks daily.

Our opening hours are:

8.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday

8.00 am – 4.00pm Saturday

9.30am – 12 noon Sunday

Find us: The Carpark, Village Road, Christow EX6 7NA or via What3words: ///currently.master.broccoli

Success of the shop relies on the continued support of the community and also our stellar team of volunteers and shop manager, Dan Rockett, who are all instrumental in its day-to-day running. There are lots of ways you can support us, from dropping in for a cuppa after the school run or buying a loaf of bread, freshly made traybake or local sausages on your way home.

Why not sign up to volunteer for a couple of hours on days and at times to suit you. For an informal chat and to find out more about volunteering contact Jenny Hall. Call 07555 402900 or email volunteers@christowshop.org.uk

New! Prize draw

For a monthly subscription of just £5 (that’s a little over £1 a week) you can take part in this new draw.

This buys you one membership number which enters you into the monthly draw. All participants must be over 16.
The draw takes place on 14th of each month, or the first working day after that.
If you win, we’ll send you an email or call you to let you know and you’ll be able to collect your winning voucher from Christow Community Shop during our normal opening hours.
The prizes will be one £30 voucher, one £20 voucher and five £10 vouchers, which can be spent on goods in the shop. The remaining funds go to the shop to help pay for equipment and running costs so we can be sure that we stay viable and open for you and the rest of the community.
Any queries, please contact Tony Clapham on 01647253066 or email lottery@christowshop.org.uk

Volunteer!

We’ve had a great response so far to our recruitment drive for volunteers to work in the shop and help to run it but we could always do with just a few more to fill all our shifts. If you could offer a couple of hours a week please don’t feel nervous about sending in an application form. It’s a very flexible role and we aim to accommodate everyone’s preferences for days and times.

  • You say which days you can do
  • You say which hours suit you best
  • You can swap shifts and take weeks off when needed
  • You can even say who you’d prefer to work alongside (there’ll be two people on at a time) – so find a friend who you’d like to work with and get them to apply too!

There will be training, CCTV to keep you safe, and Dan the Manager to help and advise.

Download a role description and volunteer application form or email volunteers@christowshop.org.uk to find out more.

A new shop for the Teign Valley, owned and run by the community, for the community.

In January 2024 a small group of Teign Valley residents held a public meeting at the TV Community Hall when we presented the results of a community survey. We were were bowled over by how much support there is for a new shop in the valley. Most responses came from Christow residents but there were significant numbers from Ashton, Bridford and Doddiscombsleigh who were also keen to see a local shop back in business.

Our fundraising drive exceeded all expectations and we raised over £70,000 in startup funds. Planning permission was granted for a temporary building in the Teign Valley Community Hall car park, Christow. The portacabin building is now in place and has been converted into an attractive and welcoming shop.

From this (above) to this (below) in just a week!

The new shop runs on a non-profit basis, owned and run by the community for the community. This gives us the unique opportunity to not only supply grocery items but also to invest profits back into community projects across the valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What will shop profits be used for?
We hope to keep prices as attractive as possible for the community, but where profits made by the shop can be spared, the money will go into community projects – for example, this could include support for projects for the school, upgrades to the playpark, or anything that will benefit the lives of our community members. Donations from the Carol Singing have already been made to the community larder and Christow PFTA.

2. Can I still buy shares?
Not at the moment. The shares offer closed on 30th September 2024. We have been delighted with the response, and we’ve now raised more than enough to be sure we can open, but we may need some extra help in the future so watch out for future share offers.

3.  Do you need volunteers to serve in the shop?
Yes and lots of you please!  Scroll to the top of this web page to find links to a role description and application form.

4.  When will the shop open?
We opened on 5th November 2024.
